Buildings and glass have a special relation. The magic it can create has no limits. It’s easy to work with glass due to the many properties that it has to offer. With solar control glass, architects can come up with designs and possibilities that are safe and last longer. Over conventional glass, modern glass is affordable and easy when it comes to maintenance.
1

In case you are looking for a specific application to control the amount of heat, reflective glass will be a superior choice. Reflective glass has a special kind of metallic coating that makes it possible to see outside while inhibiting people from seeing in. such features can be useful if you are looking for privacy during the day. This kind of glass can be used indoors as well as outdoor for endless applications. If you are looking for a solution to reduce heat gain or loss, reflective glass can be very easy to work with and extremely beneficial.
Those of you looking for the dual effect, i.e. of allowing sunlight in, while repelling solar heat, solar control glass would be the right option. The glass permits only sunlight to pass into your homes/offices resulting in a brighter environment indoors. However, it prevents the passage of sun heat by reflecting and radiating it to a large degree, leading to a cooler space. It also blocks the entry of UV rays and reduces the exposure to zero.

Essential Guide to Cleaning your Windshield

Cleaning a car windshield without the right knowledge can be a challenging job. Using the wrong equipment and method can cause a lot of scratches on your windshield. Here is windshield cleaning guide that we feel can be used to clean different types of glass windshields. Having a clean, dirt and grease-free windshield can offer a safer ride, especially in poor weather conditions.  Without making use of an expensive cleanser, it is possible to get rid of bird droppings, dirt, tree sap and other interference.
Take a look at a detailed guide that can be useful to achieve a spotless and sparkling windshield.
blog1

Choosing the ideal cleaning solution:
With numerous cleaning solutions on the market, choosing the ideal one can be a daunting task. Besides, the variety of ammonia-based, auto glass cleaners, all-purpose cleaners has catalysed the confusion by several folds.  As a result, people simply pick any solution for window glass types without thinking. I was one of them too, but after several trial and error, I realised that ammonia is harmful and so are the household cleaning solutions.  Hence, make sure you use a cleaner intended for automotive glass that can give the best results.  Such solutions offer a clean streak free windshield that is free from any obstructions.
Choosing other material:
Make sure you use a microfiber cloth to clean the windshield with the ideal cleaning solution. The cloth is made from the tiny wedge-shaped fibres that are 100 times finer than a human hair. As a result, cleaning any kind of dirt can be done easily. Besides, they are also long lasting and can be reused several times to clean different types of glass windshield.
Right way to clean any windshield:
Choosing the right kind of cleaning solution and microfiber cloth is not the end. Implying the right technique is equally important when it comes to cleaning any window glass types. Start of by cleaning the glass with water. Only then make use of the cleaning solution. Scrub water off the windshield in straight lines. Invest in a soft brush and use horizontal and vertical motion without scrubbing too hard. This is done only to loosen the grime.
Glass cleaning solution:
Spray the cleaning solution on the microfiber cloth and begin cleaning. Make sure you work from one side to another to get the best result. After the first clean, the residue is likely to remain. Repeat the procedure until you get it right. Once done, let the glass dry naturally.
By following the above-mentioned guides, you are certain to get a clean windshield.

Windshields through the ages

A car’s windshield is sometimes the only thing better the driver and the dirt from the road; dirt that contains stones among its various things. But suppose a stone comes flying in and hits the windshield, the glass does not break apart, but remains there with a spider web crack. It has taken a long time for the glass to get here and many types of glass have been experimented on and you should be thankful for it.
Origins:
Needless to say, the first car invented went pretty slow and didn’t need a windshield, it was only later when powerful engines began powering cars, that windshield became necessary. Even then, float glass was used for windshields thereby keeping the costs low. But when the windows broke, they injured the driver and passenger. French scientist Edouard Benedictus then proposed the use of a glass that was made with cellulose nitrate, which didn’t shatter when it broke. But the high production cost of the glass meant that car manufacturers refused to use it.
WW1
World War 1:
During WW1, safety glass was used to make the eyepiece in gas masks. Automakers saw that the glass worked well to protect the soldiers. They debated the use of such glass in vehicles arguing that while it would be much safer, it would also send the cost of the vehicles up, thereby risking sales. However, many of them decided to risk it and safety glass was considered being used to make windshields for cars.
USe in cars
Use in Cars:
In the decade that followed the war, windshields were still not used as much in cars. But when they were used, they still injured many passengers. Resulting in the injuries that followed and the public losing their trust in vehicles, the first use of safety glass in cars was in 1927, leading to its popularity in the years to come.
Popularity
Popularity:
In 1928, Duplate glass was introduced by the American company Pittsburgh Plate Glass company. Designs were improved upon and safety glass became a common feature in vehicles. By 1966, safety glass could be found in all passenger cars in the country and is now an important safety feature in all cars.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass is usually used in Windshields as it is a safety glass that holds together when impacted. It is made by sandwiching between two or more slices of glass, which helps the glass form breaking is called poly vinyl butyral (PVB). This kind of glass for cars keeps you safe and protects you from sudden accident this glass will stay together, and not shatter.
Use of glass
The use of glass as a windshield has evolved from not being used to becoming an important safety measure. From regular glass that injured the passengers to safety glass, windshields have come a long way from simply protecting the passenger from wind to becoming a lifesaver.
Nowadays windshields continue to grow in complexity and sophistication. Windshields are larger and often more raked. Some provide increased visibility with a windshield that extends up into the roof above the driver or one that wraps into the side of the car. Modern windshields can filter 95-99% of UV rays. Since the 90s a hybrid film with dye to absorb heat and metal to ban sun rays has provided significant reduction in infrared (IR) rays and consequent internal heat gain.

How are laminated windshields better?

With 50,000 cars on our roads, safety plays a crucial role. Accidents have been on the rise due to the tremendous increase in the number of vehicles on the road. The rise in accidents led to new developments in safety, particularly in windshields. Laminated glass is a safety glass that doesn’t shatter after an impact, no matter how big or small. It is supposed to be one the most strongest and sturdy types of glass used in the fields of automobiles, architecture and places that need high security like jewellery stores, banks etc.

dvdv

Unlike normal glass, laminated glass is made by sandwiching a glass sheet between two or more portions of glass. This sheet is known as poly vinyl butyral (PVB), which helps keep the glass from breaking.

Casualties in accidents were on a steep rise due to windshields not being strong and sturdy. Often, due to the impact of the crash, drivers would get seriously injured as the windshield would shatter since it couldn’t withstand the impact. It is then when manufacturers realized the need for astronger and more durable glass that could stand tough in such situations. And thus, in 1919 they made a glass that was strong enough to take the brute force of such impacts. Even after breaking and being punctured, the laminated glass will stay together because of the chemical PVB. Laminated glass was first used in 1927 in automobiles as a windshield.

Usually, the side and rear windows are made of tempered glass, so they shatter into small pieces after breaking. As the tempered glass breaks into small particles, it is less harmful than breaking into sharp pieces. Thus, windshields are made of laminated glass to protect the driver and the co-driver’s. The laminated glass in the car has two main functions. Firstly, it helps the co driver’s air bag to open up properly. The air bag at the driver’s side usually pops up to the drivers face. But when the passenger’s airbag opens up, it bounces off the windshield and then lands in the required position to safeguard the passenger. The second function it provides is that the driver is saved from deep cuts that would have been caused by the breaking of the windshield on impact. Often while driving, there are many objects like stone, metal etc. that hit the vehicle out of nowhere. Hence this glass very well plays its role in avoiding accidents regarding the same.

So, to conclude, laminated glass may just look like any other ordinary glass, but it really has some extraordinary features.

How Are We Going to Driving in year 2020? Futuristic cars

Unless you’re an entrenched walker or a regular customer for public transport, you probably spend more time in your car than anywhere except your sweet home and workplace.
Driving can sometimes can be an ordeal and is not always pleasant. Hours stuck in a traffic jam, futile search for a parking space or negligent fellow drivers can antagonize any driver.
aaa
But things are going to get better. A chain of innovative ideas, from various car makers and automotive-tech companies, is going to turn around the way we drive and revolutionize the way we know cars. Cutting edge engineering solutions and on-board computers, our cars are becoming smarter, safer and more fun to drive.
Cars capable of driving themselves are just round the corner. Technologies in near future will help cars to park themselves and to avoid collisions to will even talk to each other! Tomorrow’s cars will be studded with long-range headlights and will see extensive use of hydrogen fuel that not only keeps the air clean but also emits water, which might replace traditional petrol and diesel too.
aa
How about a windshield that is also your dashboard? Wouldn’t it be cool if you could view your navigation information sharp and clear on your windshield itself? Here is ‘Head-up Display for Windshields’. The dashboard information is projected right on the windshield through an in-built projector in the car’s console. The glass is built with a wedge shaped PVB film that is thin towards the bottom and thick on the top. This provides better clarity and avoids a blurred image that usually occurs in a standard windshield.
Key Benefits:

  • Provides better display clarity than standard PVB.
  • Allows the driver to stay focused on the road at the same time check their dashboard information (speed, fuel, navigation, etc.)
  • Improves driver comfort and enhances safety.

To make car travel much more eventful, a leading car manufacturer is providing 4G internet access embedded, so you can surf and stream without buffering. Another car manufacturer is deploying compressed air power to turn its axle.  A hydraulic pump/motor unit stores air generated by the engine, braking, and deceleration in a compressed air energy storage unit. This will increase the efficiency of the engine by combing this compressed air with gasoline to produce more power. Furthermore, we have internet surge radio and much awaited self-driving or driver-less car which will totally wipe out road accident and leave passenger in car with nothing to do other than just sit, enjoy and chill.
When we talk about the future of cars, it’s not just about the technologies incorporated to make our driving experience delightful and safer, but also how are those cars going to look like. For past decades, cars have not only revolutionized in their functionality but also in their looks and edges. And when it comes to making a car look more aesthetic, things that jump out of our mind are more curves and edges, more streamlines and glassy exteriors, after all people like thing that are transparent.
Glass should not be limited to just windshields, windows and mirrors, it has much more potential. For say, a American car manufacturer recently displayed a concept car fully made out of glass, and not only it looked glamorous but also didn’t compromise with efficiency of performance. Further, we think it’s time to move on from same old tin roof. How about moon light in your car instead of mood light, how about stars peeping through when you drive at night and sparkling sunshine during daytime. This all can be accomplished by shifting to glass roof instead of existing ones that we have presently.
All in all, when we look at the future of cars, not only it is bright, but also it is transparent, because it has glass.

Glass is clearly safe!

Glass is an integral part of modern architecture and interior design. A versatile and sustainable material, glass – used for façades, windows or in interiors – gives buildings and homes structural stability, aesthetic appeal and a contemporary look while helping save energy and costs.
There has been some debate about safety in the use of glass in general, particularly fire. But, be assured if proper norms and guidelines are followed for designing and constructing glass buildings, and the right types of glasses are used for façades, the destructive effects of fire are greatly reduced. In actuality, glass facades are not inflammable, rather they are flame-retardants.
fireglass
Glass – See what’s safe
internationally today, there are excellent alternatives available for clear vision safety glass. These include high-performance products like transparent glasses with intumescent layers, special coatings and laminates. Tempered/toughened glass, laminated glass, insulated glass units and wire mesh glass are also good fire retardants.
They can actually substitute a brick wall in terms of fire-rating property yet give transparency. While some of the fire safety glasses function as a physical barrier preventing the spread of fire and smoke, certain advanced solutions can actually drastically reduce the radiant heat from a fire.
The European classification standards (EN 13501) for glass use the following system:
E – Integrity
W – Low Radiation
I – Insulation
Accordingly, the following types of glasses are available in the FRG range
E Class – They provide for only integrity. These are special tempered glasses, and they prevent the spread of flames to the non-fire side. There will be no protection from radiation in this type of glass. They are normally used for internal applications.
EW Class – These are tempered and laminated glasses. They prevent the flames and control the non-fired radiation to a maximum of 15KW per sqm. They offer integrity and for low heat radiation. They are used for internal and external applications.
EI Class – This type of FRG glasses offer integrity and insulation. The maximum temperature on the non-fire side does not exceed an average of 140 degree Celsius.
durham_region_courthouse_w170811_1
A range of high-quality, fire-resistant glasses are available today to mitigate the adverse effects of fire accidents and offer enhanced protection.
• Wired Glass – It is more stable at higher temperatures and is also resistant to the pressure of fire hoses as the embedded wire mesh helps the glass keep its structural integrity even after thermal stress causes cracks
• Borosilicate Glass – Borosilicate, because of its extremely low thermal expansion coefficient, is ideal for any application that requires heat resistance
• Toughened Glass – The special tempering process used in this glass makes it highly resistant to stress. In case, it gets to the point of breaking, it crumbles into small granules that are less injury prone
• Toughened Glass with flame-retardant coating – This flame retardant coating is typically metal that further enhances the flame and heat resistance of the glass
• Toughened Glass with Intumescent gel – As is the property of any intumescent, the gel increases greatly in size when exposed to fire, and its high hydration content keeps the surrounding areas significantly cooler than any other material
• Laminated Glass with Intumescent layers – Highly desirable for façades, the lamination makes it hard enough for the façade and windows, and the intumescent layers restrict temperature rise during fires although the glass is 100% transparent and lacks wiring within
It would be unfair to blame glass for the destruction caused by fire in buildings. In most cases, it is negligence and/or illegal/ poor-quality design and construction that result in loss of life and property. If proper norms and building safety codes are followed, and guidelines adhered to, glass façades only help in fire rescue and do not make it worse. All over the world, glass is a widely accepted building material utilized on a massive scale for architecture and design.

For all that glass can be- Asahi India launch event

Sen’s Bucket covered the newly launched AIS store at South Extension which bought two experts – Glasxperts and Windshield Experts together.

ais store
Asahi India Glass store for auto and architectural needs

Never been much fond of glass except for admiring the occasional crockery at dining events, but the utility of it, seems to be far beyond, and also more dynamic. Asahi India Glass (AIS) recently unveiled their new store in South-Extension (Arjun Nagar), Delhi, where as can be seen, has dedicated areas for windshield customers (car owners), and those needing architectural support. More than just a store launch, it was a lot about the real innovation one can bring in with glass, should one be willing to spend money and have the taste for it.

ais store 1
The Windshield section of the store

A lot of the questions around glass, as with many other building materials, is the longevity of the product questioned, and also the maintenance it would need in time. Most of the products they provide are hopefully easy to maintain and do provide a great deal of assistance post sales, as well. And from the looks of it, customers are seriously pouring in with their demands, and coincidentally, there was a case of a windshield being seamlessly replaced as if nothing was ever really wrong.

As if, there was never a broken windshield!

Though the pictures are not that clear, but the stock of equipment used to fit the windshield on the car displayed above seemed to be modern and also being sophisticated enough ensure a smooth application. If one can notice, its seriously seamless in the way it was installed on the vehicle. Obviously, there were some stages to this process, but never the less swiftly followed. Perhaps the entire thing took less than an hour!

ais store 4
Glasswork Ganesh amongst the wall-decor

The star attraction at the store would be the GlasXperts section, which is dedicated to the architectural needs of the customers. The reason being, the innovation and finesse with which the company works. A lot of the best glassworks will not just be slabs of the glass alone, but artistic depictions to set them apart. The Lord Ganesh framed mural on the wall is one such example.

ais store 5
The ‘magic’ glass door

One of the things in the obviously glass laden upper floor was this otherwise simple looking door. However, the manager was kind enough to show how technology has been used behind this. What appears opaque here, will change the texture, simply with the press of a button, placed this door. With the help of sensors placed at the corners, the light passing through special crystals infused within the glass are scattered, due to which the glass becomes opaque. Similarly, when needs transparency, a flick of the switch will make light pass through the concentrated crystals which enable a clearer views across the panel.

ais store 6
The seemingly transparent door

One of the main things we all commonly grumble about, and legitimately so, is the after-sales service. Asahi India Glass happens to be a fully integrated company when it comes to selling to their customers. This means, after buying some of the hi-end products, or any product from them, you need help to maintain or repair, or perhaps need some advice for future planning and design, you can rely on these guys to come across and help you. It might cost you a bit more, but then when you compare to the conveniences, you can naturally conclude that its worth spending the extra money but have someone to give you complete solutions. You don’t need to run around different places.

ais store 7
The glass laden pathways at the GlasXperts floor

The thing about AIS is that they would not be giving you cheap imports, for the sake of margins and deal closing. That means they will charge you a price, and if it doesn’t match with the clients, they might just refuse, instead of cutting prices and compromising on quality. In short, if one has to summarize AIS, it’s about a lot of value addition, like pre-sales and after-sales services, which set them apart, and quite frankly, can be a big relief during renovations and constructions. And with their footprint increasing, one might just have a branch around the corner to help you out find something nice for home styling.

Noise Outside Quiet Inside

Noise is a growing concern and a nuisance, especially in urban areas. No matter where it originates from, noise is everywhere. It can be your next door neighbour blasting rock music or a ramped up car stereo. Sometimes the noise caused by outside traffic can cause disturbance and stress over a continued period of time.
Does noise affect you?
Too much noise can be damaging to health and can hinder learning and concentration. Noise is tiresome; it makes you anxious, annoys you, causes stress and leaves you fatigued. Studies have shown that noisy workspaces are less efficient than quiet ones. Therefore, it is very important to find new ways to keep noise where it belongs: outside.
Is there a solution?
Yes, there is! Nowadays, architects and designers are increasingly looking at glass as a preferred material while designing contemporary living spaces. All that is needed is a glass which enhances the building’s aesthetics as well as effectively eliminates external noise.
Laminated glass which is made by laminating two pieces of glass together with a poly-vinly-butryl (PVB) interlayer dampens the sound and reduces sound transmission. Laminated glass also provides other benefits like safety and security.cut noise with glass

swytchglass 1
How it works?
The principle behind Swytchglas is the Suspended Particle technology that is very similar to the concept of artificial magnets.
There is a smart film between the two Special Polymer films. The Smart Film is a suspension of liquid crystals in a polymer base that can be controlled using an electric charge. Under normal conditions the liquid crystals are randomly distributed and when light hits the glass, it is scattered by the liquid crystals. When an electric current is passed through the glass pane, the liquid crystals align themselves into straight lines allowing all the light to pass through without scattering.

Answer- Luxury, Glass
People now-a-days want modern, luxurious and spacious homes with elegant interior design, beautiful garden arrangements and sumptuous architecture. Over the last two decades, glass has become synonym with luxury.
Glass has long been associated with ideas of elegance and aesthetic design. And as time has passed, these associations have only gotten stronger. It is environment-friendly and hygienic, as well.  It can be recycled almost forever. Recycling glass saves a huge proportion of the energy needed to make glass, approx 40 percent. Unlike other materials like some metals, plastic etc.; glass does not have chemicals that leach into the ecosystem.  Even though it is true that glass does not bio-degrade, it is so recyclable that it is the preferred choice for food storage. An eco-friendly building material, like glass, increases the efficiency of energy used and reduces impact on human well-being and the environment.
The inherent beauty of glass as a material, when combined with contemporary design sensibilities, makes for an irresistible combination, one that mesmerises and enthralls in equal measure.
When thinking of decorating personal space, one must include elements which reflect their individual style and taste. Glass enables options for this scope. Simple or extravagant, there are various options available in glass to match your requirements.

The Green Revolution

The world is moving towards a greener, more eco-friendly way of living. It is therefore only natural that the space where people live and work also reflects this green evolution. The way we build has changed, and glass has made this transformation possible. For decades, architects and builders around the world have explored ways of designing the ‘nearly-Zero Energy’ building. Today, modern technology and innovative building materials has made that dream a reality. Builders are offering customers the opportunity to explore a life that’s smart, efficient, and above all, sustainable.
Green standards – IGBC and GRIHA
In India, ‘green buildings’ are rated as per two independent rating systems:

  • The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) rating system, derived from the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) norms developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.
  • The Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), developed by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), rates buildings on a comprehensive scale of 34 criteria under various sections. In about a decade, India has emerged as a leading country in the adoption of Green Building norms

NBC and ECBC codes
Apart from the above, the Government of India is also enabling environmental conservation through its building codes. The National Building Code (NBC), developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), was introduced in 1970. After three amendments, it provides guidelines for regulating construction activities across the country today. For using glass in buildings, NBC has issued revised norms that are broadly classified under the sections:

  • General requirement
  • Determination of appropriate thickness
  • Criteria of human impact safety
  • Installation
  • Fire safety
  • Energy & Thermal property

The Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), created by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and introduced in 2007, offers three distinct compliance approaches: Prescriptive (Component-based): Each system and sub-system should comply with minimal performance requirements. Trade-off (System-based): Permitted only between building envelope components – roofs, walls, fenestration, overhangs, etc. Whole Building Performance: Evaluation is based on a computer model of the proposed design and comparing it to a standard design, with various factors taken into account.
Building green with glass
The extensive use of innovative glass products in today’s buildings has helped reduce the need for artificial lighting and thereby minimised energy consumption. Green buildings cost more to build but have substantially reduced operational costs, compared to conventional buildings. Various types of glazing solutions – internal as well as external – have made spaces more efficient while unlocking new possibilities in design and aesthetics.
Green solutions from Asahi India Glass Limited As India’s leading integrated glass company, AIS has been at the forefront of moving towards an ecofriendly future. It has pioneered innovations in glass processing technology to develop both single-glazed and double-glazed products with the best ‘green’ parameters. This is giving developers and their architects greater choice and the ability to explore possibilities. These solutions enhance the aesthetics, efficiency and economics of commercial and residential spaces, compared to traditional building materials.

The future is green
According to IGBC, of 2761 buildings registered with it in India, 516 are certified as green. By 2022, it aims to register 10 billion sq. ft. of green building projects. The idea of green buildings has now gained momentum, with greater use of green materials like glass. The environmental impact of increased construction activity has been on the agenda of Government entities and the Environment Ministry. Building code changes are in the pipeline. Construction houses are striving to obtain sustainability certifications, to ensure a better quality of life and to help conserve the environment. Living in harmony with nature is the surest way of ensuring a sustainable future for the planet. ‘Green buildings’ are helping us achieve that ideal.
